Schengen Tourist Visa (Type C) — Most Common

This is the standard visa for Indian travelers visiting Liechtenstein for tourism, sightseeing, or short leisure trips. Core Documents (Mandatory for All Visa Types)

• Valid Passport — Issued within last 10 years, valid at least 3 months beyond your planned departure date from the Schengen Area, minimum 2 blank pages, no damage or water marks

• Round-Trip Flight Itinerary — Confirmed reservation to Zurich (the nearest major airport). Do NOT purchase tickets before visa approval
• Proof of Accommodation — Hotel bookings for entire stay in Liechtenstein or invitation letter from a host. Since accommodation options in Liechtenstein are limited and expensive, many travelers book in nearby Feldkirch (Austria) or Sargans (Switzerland) — this is acceptable as long as your itinerary shows Liechtenstein as your main destination

Swiss Embassy-Specific Requirements

The Swiss Embassy enforces strict document requirements. Since August 2, 2025, they accept ONLY strictly necessary documents as listed in the checklist. Extra documents (additional bank statements, property papers, etc.) are NOT accepted. This is different from many other Schengen embassies where more documentation strengthens your application.

Indian Banking Nuances

Your bank statement format matters with the Swiss Embassy:

Step 1: Determine Your Visa Type

Confirm you need a Schengen short-stay visa (Type C) for trips under 90 days. Verify that Liechtenstein is your main destination (where you spend the most nights) or your first point of entry into the Schengen Area if stays are equal across countries.

Step 2: Complete the Online Application Form

Visit the VFS Global portal for Switzerland (https://visa.vfsglobal.com/ind/en/che/). Fill the Schengen visa application form online — handwritten forms are no longer accepted. Ensure all details match your passport exactly. Print and sign the completed form.

Step 3: Book Your Appointment at VFS Global

1. Visit the VFS Global Switzerland portal
2. Select your nearest VFS center
3. Pick an available date and time — slots fill 2–3 weeks in advance during peak season (April–September)
4. Pay the VFS service fee online
5. Print the appointment confirmation letter

Tip: Book the appointment first, then collect documents. Reverse the order and you risk losing the slot. Apply on a Monday or Tuesday to catch the weekly processing cycle.

Step 4: Prepare Your Document Set

Organize documents in order:

4. Travel medical insurance certificate
5. Flight itinerary (round-trip to Zurich)

Step 5: Attend Your Biometric Appointment

1. Arrive 15 minutes before your appointment time

3. Provide biometrics — digital photograph and 10 fingerprints

5. Pay the visa fee in cash, card, or UPI
6. Collect the acknowledgment receipt with tracking number

What happens if a document is missing? The Swiss Embassy/VFS will not accept incomplete applications. You will need to book a new appointment. Come with everything or rebook.

Step 6: Track Your Application

Use the VFS Global tracking portal with your reference number. You will receive SMS and email updates. Standard processing takes 15 calendar days. If additional checks are needed, it can extend to 30–45 days.

Step 7: Collect Your Passport

Once a decision is made, collect your passport from the VFS center or opt for courier delivery. If approved, verify the visa sticker details — dates, entries, validity, name spelling — before leaving the center. The sticker will show "CHE" (Switzerland) as the issuing country, which is normal.

Note: Applicants must apply at the center corresponding to their state of residence. Jurisdiction rules are strictly enforced. The Swiss Embassy in New Delhi does not accept walk-in visa applications — all applications must be submitted through VFS Global.

The Swiss Embassy requires stronger financial proof because Switzerland (and Liechtenstein) has one of the highest costs of living in Europe. While ₹3–5 lakh may suffice for a French or German Schengen visa, the Swiss Embassy expects ₹5–8 lakh in bank statements with consistent salary credits.

Schengen Main Destination Rule

If visiting multiple Schengen countries in one trip, apply at the consulate where you spend the most nights. If stays are equal across countries, apply at the consulate of your first point of entry into the Schengen Area. The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) is launching in late 2026. However, ETIAS does NOT apply to Indian citizens.

Why: ETIAS is only for visa-exempt travelers (US, UK, Canadian, Australian citizens). Since Indian citizens already need a Schengen visa, ETIAS is irrelevant to you. You will continue applying for Schengen visas as before.

When: ETIAS is expected to become mandatory in the final quarter of 2026.
