Luxembourg Visa for Indians 2026: Fees, Process & Types

Understanding which visa type you need is the first step. Luxembourg follows standard Schengen visa categories with additional long-stay national visa options.

Schengen Tourist Visa (Type C) — Most Common

This is the standard visa for Indian travelers visiting Luxembourg for tourism, sightseeing, or short family visits. Luxembourg is a compact European country known for its medieval old town (UNESCO World Heritage), the Bock Casemates fortress, and its position as a European financial center. Duration: Maximum 90 days in any 180-day period

Validity: Single, double, or multiple entry

Processing: 15 calendar days from the date the application is received at the Embassy. Can extend to 45 calendar days if further checks are needed.

Activities allowed: Tourism, visiting friends and family, cultural events, attending concerts or exhibitions

Activities NOT allowed: Employment, paid work, studying beyond short courses

Key detail: Tourist visa submissions must be made in person — representatives and travel agents are NOT permitted to submit on your behalf. The Embassy requires the applicant to appear personally at the VFS centre.

Schengen Business Visa (Type C)

Luxembourg is a major European financial and EU institutional hub, hosting the European Court of Justice, the European Investment Bank, and numerous multinational corporations. Indian professionals attending business meetings, conferences, or trade events in Luxembourg typically need a business Schengen visa.

Processing: Often 10-15 working days with a strong Luxembourgish company invitation.

Important: Business visa submissions can be made by an authorized representative — this is different from tourist visas, which require in-person submission.

 Business Invitation Letter Requirements

The invitation letter is the single most important document for a business visa. Your invitation letter must contain:

Student Visa (Type D)

Luxembourg offers affordable European education through the University of Luxembourg, which provides programs in English, French, and German. The University of Luxembourg ranks among the top 250 universities globally and charges minimal tuition fees compared to other Western European countries.

Duration: Initially covers the study period; residence permit required for stays beyond 90 days

Processing: 30-60 days

Key documents: Admission letter from accredited Luxembourg institution, proof of accommodation, financial means, health insurance

Financial proof: Students must demonstrate sufficient funds to cover tuition and living expenses. Luxembourg requires students to show monthly resources equal to at least 80% of the social inclusion income (REVIS) — approximately EUR 1,500–1,555 per month for 2026 (roughly ₹1,62,000–₹1,68,000). This must be proven through bank statements for the past 6 months, scholarship certificates, or a financial statement of support from a Luxembourg-based sponsor.

Work rights: Students may work up to 15 hours per week during studies, subject to authorization from the Employment Agency of Luxembourg (ADEM).

Work Visa (Type D)

Luxembourg operates a work permit system for non-EU nationals. The employer must first obtain a work authorization from ADEM (Employment Agency of Luxembourg) before the visa application. Luxembourg also participates in the EU Blue Card scheme for highly skilled professionals.

Duration: Initially covers the employment period; renewable residence permit

Processing: 30-60 days

Note: Luxembourg does NOT have a "job seeker" visa category. The government has explicitly warned against misinformation about a 5-day work permit — no such expedited process exists.

Airport Transit Visa (Type A)

Indian citizens do NOT need an airport transit visa for Luxembourg. India is not on the Annex IV list of countries requiring an airport transit visa for Schengen airports. You may transit through Luxembourg Airport without a visa provided you remain in the international transit area and hold a valid onward ticket.

Countries that DO require an airport transit visa include Afghanistan, Bangladesh, DR Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Ghana, Iran, Iraq, Nigeria, Pakistan, Somalia, and Sri Lanka.

 Fee Waivers

The following categories are exempt from visa fees (mandatory under Article 16(4) of the EU Visa Code):

• Children under 6 years of age
• School pupils, students, postgraduate students, and accompanying teachers traveling for study or educational training
• Researchers traveling for scientific research
• Representatives of non-profit organizations aged 25 or younger attending seminars, conferences, sports, cultural, or educational events
• Family members of EU/EEA/Swiss nationals
• Diplomatic and service passport holders

Note: Article 16(5)(a) of the Visa Code allows member states to optionally waive fees for children aged 6-12, but Luxembourg does not apply this waiver — children 6-12 pay the reduced fee of EUR 45.

 Visa Facilitation Countries

Nationals of certain countries pay a reduced fee of EUR 35 under the Visa Facilitation Agreement. This does NOT apply to Indian nationals — Indians pay the standard EUR 90 fee for Type C visas.

Important: All visa fees are non-refundable, even if your application is rejected or withdrawn.

Meeting all documentation requirements is critical for visa approval. The Luxembourg Embassy has a 15.7% rejection rate for Indian applicants — higher than the EU average of 12.8% — making proper documentation essential.

Core Documents (All Visa Types)

1. Completed and Signed Application Form

• Use the Schengen visa application form
• Must be signed by the applicant (not by a representative for tourist visas)

2. Passport Photo

• IAO criteria: colour, recent, front-facing
• Size: 35mm x 45mm
• White background
• No glasses, no head coverings (unless religious)

3. Valid Passport

• Issued within the last 10 years
• At least 2 blank pages
• Valid for at least 3 months beyond your intended departure date from the Schengen area (Type C)
• Valid for at least 6 months from the date of travel (Type D)
• Cannot be handwritten or non-machine-readable if issued after 01.04.2010

Important: Indian passports issued after April 1, 2010 that are handwritten or non-machine-readable are NOT accepted by the Luxembourg Embassy. Verify your passport is machine-readable before applying.

4. Biometrics

• Fingerprints required if not collected within the last 59 months
• Collected at the VFS centre during submission

5. Proof of Transport

• Reservation or booking — confirmed tickets are NOT required
• The Embassy explicitly accepts flight reservations and itineraries without requiring confirmed bookings

6. Proof of Accommodation

• Hotel bookings covering your entire stay
• OR invitation letter with host's address (for family/friend visits)

7. Travel Itinerary

• Day-by-day plan covering your time in Luxembourg and any other Schengen countries

8. Proof of Financial Means

• Original bank statement showing transactions for the last 3 months, stamped and signed by the bank
• Indian ITR acknowledgment for the last 2 assessment years
• Payslips or pension statements for the last 3 months

Financial benchmark: No fixed official amount is published by the Embassy. EUR 50–67 per person per day is a commonly cited benchmark. For a 15-day trip, maintain approximately ₹67,500–₹90,000 minimum balance. For a 30-day trip, maintain approximately ₹1,35,000–₹1,80,000 minimum balance.

9. Travel Health Insurance

• Minimum EUR 30,000 coverage
• Must cover medical emergencies, hospitalization, and repatriation
• Must be valid for the entire Schengen area
• Must cover the entire duration of your stay

10. Evidence of Economic, Family, and Social Roots in India

• Employment letter or business registration
• Property documents (if applicable)
• Family ties (marriage certificate, children's documents)
• Evidence you have reasons to return to India

Documents for Business Visa

In addition to core documents:

• Invitation letter from Luxembourg company (see Business Invitation Letter Requirements above)
• Employer No Objection Certificate (NOC)
• Proof of previous business relationships (contracts, invoices, correspondence)

Documents for Student Visa

In addition to core documents:

• Admission letter from accredited Luxembourg institution
• Proof of tuition payment or scholarship
• Financial means documentation showing EUR 1,500–1,555/month minimum (80% of REVIS social inclusion income)

Documents for Work Visa

• Proof of qualifications (degrees, certifications)

Language Requirement

All documents must be in English or accompanied by an English translation by a sworn translator.

Follow these 7 steps to complete your Luxembourg visa application.

Step 1: Determine Your Visa Type

Identify whether you need a Type C (short-stay, up to 90 days) or Type D (long-stay, over 90 days) visa based on your purpose of travel and duration.

Step 2: Complete the Application Form

Fill out the Schengen visa application form. Download the form from the Luxembourg VFS portal at visa.vfsglobal.com/ind/en/lux or obtain it from the VFS centre. Print and sign the completed form.

Step 3: Gather Required Documents

Collect all documents from the checklist above. Ensure your passport meets all validity requirements, your bank statements are stamped and signed, and your travel insurance meets the EUR 30,000 minimum.

Step 4: Book Your VFS Appointment

Book an appointment through Luxembourg's dedicated VFS portal at visa.vfsglobal.com/ind/en/lux. Luxembourg has its OWN VFS portal — it is NOT processed through Belgium or any other country's VFS system.

Note: Walk-in appointments may be available depending on the centre and time of year, but booking in advance is strongly recommended, especially during peak season (March–June).

Step 5: Visit the VFS Centre

Attend your appointment in person (mandatory for tourist visas). Bring all original documents plus photocopies. Biometrics will be collected at the centre. Pay the VFS service charge and embassy visa fee.

Processing note: After submission at VFS, your application takes 1-4 days to reach the Embassy of Luxembourg in New Delhi. The Embassy then has 15 calendar days (standard) or up to 45 calendar days (extended) to process your application.

Step 6: Track Your Application

Track your application status through the VFS portal or the SMS tracking service (₹150 optional). You will receive updates via SMS or email as your application progresses.

Step 7: Collect Your Passport

Collect your passport from the VFS centre or opt for courier delivery (₹500–₹700). Check the visa sticker carefully for accuracy — name spelling, validity dates, number of entries, and duration of stay.

Luxembourg processes visa applications through its own VFS Global centres across India. This is NOT through Belgium's VFS — Luxembourg has a dedicated portal at visa.vfsglobal.com/ind/en/lux.
